In the name of God, the Most Merciful, the Source of Mercy. Our new baby is almost here, God-willing! We're going to use this site to share the experience with everyone, including the preparations we made before the arrival, how the birth went, and how things have been going since. Don't worry, there will be lots of pictures! We haven't totally decided on a name for a girl yet, although we have had a boy's name for quite some time. We will let everyone in on the name as soon as we know what the baby is and have finished dueling it out ourselves :-) Actually, we are having a lot of fun trying to decide, and wondering if it will be a girl or a boy. We are getting anxious as the day arrives. But most of all we pray that Allah make it easy on us and our new child and give us a healthy baby. Some cliche ideas are good ones, I must say. Traditions: FYI Traditionally speaking, Muslim fathers say the adhan, or call to prayer in the ear of the newborn, just after birth. It goes like this: Allahu Akbar! (God is the Greatest!) Allahu Akbar! (God is the Greatest!) Allahu Akbar! (God is the Greatest!) Allahu Akbar! (God is the Greatest!) Ashadu ala ilaha illallah! (I bear witness that there is only one God!) Ashadu ala ilaha illallah! (I bear witness that there is only one God!) Ashadu ana Muhammadan rasul-allah! (I bear witness that Muhammad is the messenger of God!) Ashadu ana Muhammadan rasul-allah! (I bear witness that Muhammad is the messenger of God!) Hiiya ala Salaat! (Hurry to worship!) Hiiya ala Salaat! (Hurry to worship!) Hiiya ala Falah! (Hurry to success!) Hiiya ala Falah! (Hurry to success!) Allahu Akbar! (God is the Greatest!) Allahu Akbar! (God is the Greatest!) La illaha illallah! (There is no deity except the One God!) I finally had the chance to do this today, Friday, 13th Shawaal, 1422 A.H/28th December, 2001 C.E, right after he was born, and he became so calm at the sound of my voice. It was amazing! Within a week or two, an aqiqah is usually thrown. This is a feast in which the family of the newborn feeds family, friends, and the community, in celebration of the new child. |
